Freshdesk and Zoho Desk are both full help desks that cost less than many rivals. Both turn emails and other messages into tickets, with a knowledge base, automations and reports. Zoho Desk starts cheaper and has a free plan with no end date. Freshdesk includes more AI on its entry plan.
The short verdict
Pick Zoho Desk if price matters most, you want a free plan for up to three people, or you already use Zoho apps such as Zoho CRM.
Pick Freshdesk if you want AI agent sessions included from the first paid plan, or you prefer to try the top plan in full before you choose.
Prices and plans
All prices are in US dollars, as of October 2026, from each vendor's pricing page. Both are cheaper on annual billing.
Zoho Desk, per user per month. Zoho's page shows prices in local currency by country, so figures outside the US may differ.
- Free: 3 users, with limited features and email ticketing.
- Express: $7 billed annually, or $9 monthly. Email, social media and web forms, workflows, and AI agents using your own AI key or Zoho's model.
- Standard: $14 billed annually, or $20 monthly. Adds chat, messaging apps such as WhatsApp, a knowledge base, a community forum and satisfaction surveys.
- Professional: $23 billed annually, or $35 monthly. Adds phone, Zia AI, multiple departments, round-robin assignment and a multilingual help centre.
- Enterprise: $40 billed annually, or $50 monthly. Adds live chat through Zoho SalesIQ, skill-based assignment and help centres for several brands.
Freshdesk, per agent per month:
- Growth: $19 billed annually, or $23 monthly. Ticketing, a shared inbox, a customer portal, a knowledge base and automations.
- Pro: $55 billed annually, or $66 monthly. Adds a multilingual help desk, custom dashboards, smarter routing and multiple SLA policies.
- Enterprise: $89 billed annually, or $107 monthly. Adds skill-based routing, a sandbox and audit logs.
At every level, Zoho Desk lists a lower price per user. Zoho Desk Professional, at $23, costs a little more than Freshdesk Growth, at $19, and includes phone and Zia AI.
Free options and trials
Zoho Desk has a free plan for 3 users, described as free forever. Every paid plan has a 15-day trial with no credit card.
Freshdesk gives you 14 days on its Enterprise plan when you sign up. Its help centre also describes a Free Program for up to two agents. It lasts six months, and then you move to a paid plan.
If you want to stay free for a long time with two or three people, Zoho Desk is the clearer choice.
AI features and costs
Freshdesk includes the first 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions on each paid plan. That AI agent can reply to customers by email. More sessions cost $49 per 100. The Freddy AI Copilot, which helps your team write replies, summarise and translate, is $29 per agent a month billed annually, or $35 monthly, on Pro and Enterprise.
Zoho Desk builds Zia AI into Professional and Enterprise. Standard includes a reply bot that answers from your knowledge base articles. Express lets you build AI agents with your own OpenAI key or with Zoho's own model.
Whichever you use, AI answers come from your help articles. If those are out of date, the AI will be too. AI chatbots for customer service explains how to set one up safely.
Working with your other tools
Zoho Desk is part of the Zoho family, which also sells a CRM and accounting software. If you already use those, keeping support in the same family can save setup time. There is more in Pipedrive vs Zoho CRM and Zoho Books vs QuickBooks.
Freshdesk is part of Freshworks, which also sells a CRM and IT support software. Check that the apps you already use connect to the help desk you pick.
How to decide
- Count your agents and multiply by the plan price. The gap grows with every person.
- List your channels: email only, or chat, WhatsApp and phone too.
- Decide how much AI you want and when you want it.
- Start Zoho's free plan and Freshdesk's trial in the same week with the same emails.
- Set up five saved replies and one automation in each, then see which felt easier.
