Zendesk and Freshdesk both turn customer emails into tickets that a team can assign, track and close. For a small business, the useful differences are the free option, how each one charges for AI, and when chat is included.
The short verdict
Pick Freshdesk if you mostly answer email, you want a no-cost start for one or two people, or you want some AI agent sessions included from the start.
Pick Zendesk if you want email, live chat and phone in one plan, or you expect to grow into a larger support team with more routing options.
Both have a free trial. Test each one with a week of real customer emails before you pay.
Prices and plans
All prices are in US dollars per agent per month, as of October 2026, from each vendor's pricing page. Both are cheaper on annual billing.
- Support Team: $19 billed annually, or $25 billed monthly. Email and ticketing, routing, ready-made reports, saved replies and automations.
- Suite Team: $55 billed annually, or $69 billed monthly. Adds AI agents, messaging and live chat, phone and routing across channels.
- Suite Professional: $115 billed annually, or $149 billed monthly. Adds AI writing tools, skills-based routing and a phone menu.
- Suite Enterprise: price on request.
- Growth: $19 billed annually, or $23 billed monthly. Ticketing, a shared inbox, a customer portal, a knowledge base, automations and reports.
- Pro: $55 billed annually, or $66 billed monthly. Adds a multilingual help desk, custom dashboards, smarter routing and multiple SLA policies.
- Enterprise: $89 billed annually, or $107 billed monthly. Adds skill-based routing, a sandbox and audit logs.
On annual billing, the first two price points match: $19 and $55. Above that, Zendesk Suite Professional is $115 and Freshdesk Enterprise is $89.
Free options and trials
Zendesk has no free plan. Its pricing page offers a 14-day free trial.
Freshdesk's pricing page offers a 14-day trial of its Enterprise plan. Freshworks' help centre also describes a Free Program for up to two agents. It lasts six months. After that, you need a paid plan to keep going.
So for a solo founder who wants to try a real help desk for a while at no cost, Freshdesk has the longer runway.
How each one charges for AI
Both sell AI that answers customers directly, and an assistant that helps your own team write replies.
Zendesk counts automated resolutions. That is a request its AI agent solves without handing it to a person. As of October 2026, Support Team and Suite Team include 5 per agent per month, and Suite Professional includes 10. Extra ones cost $1.50 each with a commitment, or $2.00 each pay-as-you-go. The Copilot assistant for agents is $50 per agent per month, billed annually, on Suite Professional and above.
Freshdesk includes the first 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions on each paid plan. More cost $49 per 100 sessions. The Freddy AI Copilot assistant is $29 per agent per month billed annually, or $35 billed monthly, on Pro and Enterprise.
For a small business, the included amounts are modest either way. Before you budget for AI, count how many of last month's questions a help article could have answered. The risks are covered in AI chatbots for customer service.
Channels
Zendesk's Support Team plan covers email and ticketing. Messaging, live chat and phone start at Suite Team. If many customers reach you by chat, Suite Team is the Zendesk plan to compare.
Freshworks describes Freshdesk Growth as a plan for AI-powered service over email. If you also need chat, WhatsApp or phone, check the full plan comparison on Freshworks' site for each channel before you choose.
How to decide
- Count the people who will answer customers. Both price per agent, so this sets your bill.
- List your channels. Email only, or chat and phone too?
- Look at last month's questions. How many could a help article have answered?
- Run both trials with the same week of real emails.
- Write five saved replies in each tool and notice which one you would keep using.
If neither fits, Zendesk alternatives for small business covers Help Scout, Zoho Desk and others. Freshdesk vs Zoho Desk compares Freshdesk with a lower-priced option.
The tool does not write the reply
A help desk sorts and tracks messages. The words still come from you. Ready-to-use wording is in customer service email templates and how to respond to a customer complaint.
Nive is being built for a nearby problem: you write how your business works once, and it drafts emails in your voice for you to review and send. It is not a help desk. Join the waitlist to get the demo first.
