Notion AI works on the pages your business already keeps in Notion. ChatGPT is a separate assistant you bring your work to. For most businesses, where your notes live decides this more than anything else.
Prices and features below are as of October 2026. Check the official pages before you pay.
The short verdict
Pick Notion AI if:
- Your plans, processes, client notes and docs already live in Notion.
- You want AI that can read those pages and create or edit pages and databases for you.
- Your team is on Notion's Business plan, or would move to it anyway.
Pick ChatGPT if:
- You do not use Notion, or use it only lightly.
- You want a free plan, or a low-cost plan for one person.
- You want one assistant for writing, research and planning, wherever your files live.
Context: the main difference
An assistant writes better when it knows your business. The question is how it gets that knowledge.
Notion AI reads your workspace. According to Notion's help page, Notion Agent can answer questions about your pages, query databases, and create and edit pages and databases. It has the same access you do, so it cannot see pages you cannot see. Enterprise Search can also look across connected apps such as Slack and Google Drive (Notion AI FAQ).
ChatGPT knows what you give it. You paste text, attach files, or add them to a project. Custom instructions and memory carry some facts between chats (Projects in ChatGPT).
If your Notion pages are up to date, Notion AI starts each task with more of your business in view. If they are messy or old, it will use the wrong facts with confidence. Clean pages help either way. The idea is covered in a second brain for your business.
Writing
Both can draft, edit, shorten, summarise and translate.
- In Notion, you write on the page itself. Inline AI can edit, summarise, translate or draft content where you are working (Notion AI FAQ). The draft is already where it needs to be.
- In ChatGPT, you write in the chat and copy the result out. Long drafts appear in writing blocks you can edit and revise part by part (writing blocks).
For your voice, both need the same thing: samples, rules and banned words. Keep them on one Notion page or in a ChatGPT project. The method is in how to make AI sound like you.
Models
Notion lets you choose the model behind Notion Agent. As of October 2026, its help page lists Claude, GPT and Gemini models among the options, or Auto, which picks one for each task (Notion Agent). Some premium models use extra credits and must be turned on by an admin.
ChatGPT uses OpenAI's own models.
Price
From the Notion pricing page:
- Free and Plus ($10 per member a month): a limited trial of Notion AI.
- Business ($20 per member a month): includes Notion Agent, AI meeting notes and Enterprise Search.
- Enterprise: custom pricing.
From the ChatGPT pricing page:
- Free, Go at $8 a month in the US, Plus at $20 a month and Pro from $100 a month.
- Business at $25 per user a month billed monthly, or $20 billed yearly, for two or more users (OpenAI's billing help).
If you would pay for Notion Business anyway, the AI comes with it. If you would upgrade only for the AI, compare that cost with a ChatGPT plan.
Data
- Notion. Read Notion's AI security and privacy page and check the workspace setting "Share data to improve Notion AI". The Enterprise plan adds zero data retention with model providers (pricing).
- ChatGPT. On personal plans, turn off "Improve the model for everyone" if you do not want chats used for training. Business plans are not used for training by default (data controls).
How to decide
- Count how much of your business is written down in Notion today.
- Try the Notion AI trial on three real tasks that need those pages.
- Run the same three tasks in ChatGPT, pasting in the same facts.
- Compare the edits each draft needs and the time spent gathering context.
- Then compare the price for your real number of users.
Whichever you choose, the quality of what it reads sets the quality of what it writes. Here is what to put on a one-page context file.
