A second brain is a place outside your head that holds what you know. For a business, it holds how you work.
Where the idea comes from
The phrase became popular through Tiago Forte's book Building a Second Brain. His idea was personal. Save your notes in one system, so you can find them and use them later.
The idea has moved on. People now connect their notes to AI assistants, so the assistant can read what they know. Searches like "second brain for Claude" and "how to build a second brain with AI" show how many people are trying it.
A business second brain is different
A personal second brain holds ideas, quotes and reading notes. If a note is a bit wrong, nothing breaks.
A business second brain holds facts that someone will act on. If the price is wrong, a customer gets the wrong quote. So it needs fewer pages, and each one needs to be right.
- Your offer. What you sell, the price and what is included.
- Your customers. Who they are, what they bought and what you promised them.
- Your voice. How you write, and the words you never use.
- Your decisions. What you chose, and why, so you stop deciding it again.
- Your routines. How you do the jobs that come back every week.
How to build one this week
- Pick one home. A folder of plain text files is enough. Notion and Obsidian work too. Plain files travel best, because every AI tool can read them.
- Write five pages. One for each item in the list above. Keep each to one page.
- Use it before every AI task. Give the tool the pages that task needs. There is a guide to giving AI context about your business.
- Change the source first. When a price changes, update the page before you do anything else.
- Read it once a month. Delete what is no longer true.
Start with the offer and the voice pages. They are used in almost every task, and you can write both in an afternoon.
Where it breaks
A second brain fails in three common ways.
- You copy it by hand. Pasting pages into each tool works for a week. Then you skip it once, and the drafts go generic again.
- Nobody checks the work against it. The page says no discounts. The draft offers ten percent. If you do not compare them, the page did nothing.
- It grows until nobody reads it. Fifty pages is an archive. Keep the working set small.
Second brain vs AI memory
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all have memory now. It is useful, but it is a different thing.
Tool memory is the tool's summary of you. It lives inside one product, and the tool decides what to keep. A second brain is yours. You wrote it, you can read all of it, and any tool can use it. There is a comparison of how each assistant remembers on this blog.
What Nive is building
Nive is being built as a second brain for one-person businesses. You tell it how you work once. Each job, starting with cold emails, reads from it, and you see which of your rules a draft followed and which it broke. You review everything before it goes out.
The demo is planned for December 2026. Join the waitlist to get it first.
