Copy.ai is a platform for sales and marketing teams. ChatGPT is a general assistant for almost any task. They overlap on writing, and differ on most things around it.
Prices and features below are as of October 2026. Check the official pages before you pay.
The short verdict
Pick Copy.ai if:
- You have a small sales or marketing team that writes for one brand.
- You want brand voice and company facts set once and shared by the whole team.
- You want to turn a repeated process, such as researching leads and drafting outreach, into a workflow.
Pick ChatGPT if:
- You work alone, and writing is one of many jobs you use AI for.
- You want a free plan, or a paid plan for one person.
- You also want help with planning, research, numbers and customer questions.
What Copy.ai is built for
Copy.ai describes itself as a platform for go-to-market work: sales, marketing and operations teams (copy.ai). Its main parts:
- Chat, for one-off writing and research tasks.
- Brand Voice, which you build by pasting samples of your writing. Copy.ai suggests at least 300 words of samples (Brand Voice).
- Infobase, a store for company facts that the tool can draw on when it writes.
- Workflows, which turn a repeated sales or marketing process into steps the tool runs for you.
The Chat plan also gives access to models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google in one place (Copy.ai pricing). If you like to compare models on the same task, that is useful.
What ChatGPT is built for
ChatGPT is a general assistant. It drafts emails and posts, and it also explains, summarises, plans and works with files. For an owner who does a bit of everything, that range is the main reason to choose it.
There is no Brand Voice or Infobase by those names. You build the same thing with:
- Custom instructions that apply to every chat. Paid plans allow up to 5,000 characters (custom instructions).
- Projects that hold files and instructions for one area of work (Projects in ChatGPT).
You keep these up to date yourself. The guides on making AI sound like you and giving AI context about your business show what to put in them.
Price
From the Copy.ai pricing page:
- Chat: $29 a month billed monthly, or $24 a month billed yearly. Includes five seats.
- Growth: $1,000 a month, with 75 seats and credits for workflows.
- Larger plans and Enterprise for bigger teams.
From the ChatGPT pricing page:
- Free, Go at $8 a month in the US, Plus at $20 a month and Pro from $100 a month.
- Business at $25 per user a month billed monthly, or $20 billed yearly, for two or more users (OpenAI's billing help).
The pricing works differently. Copy.ai's Chat plan is one price for up to five people. ChatGPT Business is priced per user. For a team of three to five, do the sum for your own team size.
The pricing page lists workflow credits from the Growth plan up. If workflows are the reason you want Copy.ai, check what the Chat plan includes before you buy.
Data settings
Check how each tool handles your data before you paste in customer details.
- ChatGPT. On personal plans, turn off "Improve the model for everyone" if you do not want your chats used for training. Business plans are not used for training by default (data controls).
- Copy.ai. Read its privacy and security pages, and ask sales about your plan.
Either way, set simple rules for your team. The AI policy template is a good start.
How to decide
- Pick three real jobs, such as a cold email, a LinkedIn post and a product page.
- Give both tools the same samples and the same facts about your business.
- Run each job in both, and count the edits each draft needs.
- Note how long the setup took, and who on your team will keep it current.
- Compare the monthly cost for your real number of users.
If neither feels right, the post on Jasper AI alternatives covers more options, including free ones.
