Happy clients want to help you. Most never refer you, because nobody told them who to send. A good referral request fixes that in three sentences.
Ask when they are happy
The right moment is after a result. The project is done, a goal was hit, or they just thanked you. It is often the same moment you would ask for a testimonial.
Do not ask while something is going wrong. Fix it first.
Describe exactly who you help
"If you know anyone who needs help, let me know" gets nothing. People cannot think of "anyone". They can think of a specific person.
If you know anyone who could use my services, please send them my way!
I work best with cafés that are busy at weekends and quiet in the week. If you know an owner like that, I would love an introduction.
The second version makes one face pop into their head. That is the referral.
Template: asking in person or by email
Hi Omar,
I am really glad the new menu boards worked out, and thank you for the kind words last week.
Most of my work comes from people like you mentioning me. I work best with restaurants that want to look more upmarket without a full redesign. If someone like that comes to mind, I would be grateful for an introduction.
No pressure at all if nobody does.
Make the introduction easy
People are more likely to refer you if the introduction takes no effort. Offer a short message they can forward.
Hi Lina, I worked with Sam on our menu boards and it went really well. You mentioned wanting a refresh, so I thought you two should talk. Sam, Lina runs the café on the corner of Park Street.
Say thank you, whatever happens
Thank them as soon as they send someone. Then tell them how it went. People who see their referral was looked after send more.
A reward is optional. A discount or a small gift can help, but a personal thank-you and an update often matter more.
Ask regularly, not once
Referrals are not a single request. Build a habit: after every finished project or every few months with a long-term client, ask once, kindly.
Keep a simple list of who referred whom, and when you last asked. When you run every part of a business yourself, that list is easy to lose. It belongs with the rest of your business notes, in one place you can find, like a second brain for your business.
