Gemini vs ChatGPT for writing: which suits your work

Gemini lives where many people already write: Gmail and Google Docs. ChatGPT is a separate place you go to write. That difference decides more than the model does.

Gemini lives where many people already write: Gmail and Google Docs. ChatGPT is a separate place you go to write. For most small businesses, that difference matters more than which model is ahead this month.

Prices and features below are as of October 2026. Both change often, so check the official pages before you pay.

The short verdict

Pick Gemini if:

  • Your business runs on Google Workspace, and most of your writing happens in Gmail and Docs.
  • You want help inside the email or document you are already writing, without copying text between tabs.

Pick ChatGPT if:

  • You write in many places, or you do not use Google's apps.
  • You want one writing space with projects, where each project keeps its own files and instructions.

For tone and quality, neither wins every task. Test both on your own work, as shown at the end.

Where each one writes

Gemini. According to the Gemini plans page, as of October 2026:

  • The free plan includes the Gemini app, Canvas, Gems and Deep Research, with usage limits.
  • Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month in the US and adds Gemini in Gmail.
  • Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month in the US and adds Gemini in Gmail and Docs, with higher limits.

For a business account, the Google Workspace pricing page lists Business Starter at $7 per user a month and Business Standard at $14. Starter includes Gemini in Gmail. Gemini in Docs starts with Standard.

ChatGPT. You write in the ChatGPT app or website, then copy the draft to where it goes. Long drafts appear in writing blocks that you can edit in place and revise part by part (writing blocks in ChatGPT). Plans, from the ChatGPT pricing page: Free, Go at $8 a month in the US, Plus at $20, and Business at $25 per user a month billed monthly.

Teaching it your style

Both write in a generic voice until you show them yours. The fix is the same in both: samples, short rules and a banned list. The full method is in how to make AI sound like you.

Where the rules live:

  • ChatGPT has custom instructions for every chat. Paid plans can save up to 5,000 characters. Projects can hold their own instructions too (custom instructions).
  • Gemini has Gems: a saved set of instructions, with files you can add as knowledge (get started with Gems). Google says Gems will move to a feature called skills. That starts in November 2026 for personal accounts and March 2027 for Workspace business accounts (Gems to skills). Google says the move is automatic, but keep a copy of your instructions in a plain text file anyway.

A plain text voice file is the safest home for your rules. It works in both tools, and in whatever comes next. Use the brand voice guidelines template to write one.

Data settings

Check these before you paste in anything about customers.

  • Gemini, personal account. With Keep Activity on, Google may use your chats to improve its models, and some chats are read by human reviewers. You can turn it off (Gemini Apps Privacy Hub).
  • Gemini, Workspace business plan. On Business Starter, Standard and Plus, Google says chats are not reviewed by people or used to improve its models (Gemini with a work account).
  • ChatGPT. On personal plans, turn off "Improve the model for everyone" if you do not want chats used for training. Business plans are not used for training by default (data controls).

Test both on your own writing

  • Pick three real jobs: a reply to a customer, a social post and a one-page document.
  • Write one brief for each, with your context and voice rules at the top.
  • Run each brief in both tools, in a new chat.
  • Put the drafts side by side without the tool names, and read them the next day.
  • Count the edits you would make. Then weigh in where you write every day.

If the drafts are close, choose the one inside the apps you already open. You will use it more. If you write mostly outside Google's apps, compare ChatGPT with Claude for writing as well.

Questions people ask

Is Gemini or ChatGPT better for writing?

It depends on the task and on where you write. Run the same brief in both and compare how many edits each draft needs before you would send it.

Can Gemini write emails in Gmail?

Yes, on plans that include Gemini in Gmail. That covers Google AI Plus and Pro for personal accounts, and Google Workspace business plans.

Is Gemini free?

There is a free plan with usage limits. Gemini inside Gmail and Docs needs a paid Google AI plan or a Workspace business plan.

What happens to my Gems?

Google says Gems move to a new feature called skills, from November 2026 for personal accounts and from March 2027 for Workspace business accounts.
