A fractional CMO in the US costs about $7,500 to $12,000 a month for roughly 15 hours a week, on current market data. Hourly rates mostly run $125 to $210. That buys the leader only: ad spend, tools and the people who do the work come on top. Prices are in US dollars, as of October 2026.
The numbers
Few fractional CMOs publish a price list. The figures below come from hiring platforms that track rates, and from a survey.
- Go Fractional, a hiring platform, puts the average fractional CMO at $173 an hour, with the middle half between $125 and $200. At a typical 15 hours a week, that is $7,500 to $12,000 a month. It uses 49 job posts and 1,124 candidate profiles from the last 90 days.
- The Fractional Work Report 2026 by Fractional Jobs puts marketing executives at $209 an hour on average, in a survey of VP-level and above.
- MarketerHire, a marketing talent marketplace, says in its own cost guide that most fractional CMO retainers run $3,000 to $15,000 a month for 10 to 20 hours a week, and hourly work runs $150 to $350.

Go Fractional also shows that employers post an average of $131 an hour. Candidates ask for more. If your budget sits at the low end, expect a smaller pool.
Where prices are not published
Most independent CMOs and small firms quote after a call. What moves the price:
- Hours a month. This is the biggest lever. Ask for it before the fee.
- Hands-on work. A CMO who also builds campaigns charges more than one who only leads.
- Your market. B2B with long sales cycles, regulated fields or many countries all add work.
- Experience. Someone who has grown a company like yours to the next stage charges more.
- Team size. Managing an agency and three freelancers takes more hours than coaching one marketer.
What else to budget
The retainer is only part of your marketing cost. Plan for:
- Ad spend, paid straight to the ad platforms.
- Software: email, CRM, analytics, design tools.
- The people who do the work: freelancers, a marketer on staff or an agency.
- Content costs: photos, video, design.
- A setup or audit fee, if the CMO charges one in the first month.
For agency rates, Clutch's pricing guide, updated in September 2026, says agencies on its site price services like SEO, content and paid ads at $100 to $149 an hour, and most projects reviewed there cost $10,000 to $49,999.
Compared with a full-time marketing leader
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median salary for marketing managers at $166,790 in May 2025. In private industry, benefits add about 30% to an employer's cost, per the BLS employer cost survey for June 2026. A rough loaded cost is about $238,000 a year.
Compare over a year:
- A fractional CMO at $7,500 to $12,000 a month: $90,000 to $144,000.
- A full-time marketing manager at the BLS median, with benefits: about $238,000.
The fractional CMO costs less because you buy two days a week. If you need someone in the office full time, managing a big team, the full-time hire starts to make more sense.
Is it worth it
A fractional CMO pays off when the main problem is direction: you spend on marketing but do not know what works, or you need a plan and a team in place before you hire a full-time leader.
It is a poor fit when:
- You have no budget left for ads, tools or execution after the retainer.
- Your offer is not clear yet, and you need to test it with sales calls first.
- You need someone to produce content every day. Hire a marketer or freelancer instead.
A simple test: write down what one new client is worth to you over a year. If the CMO's monthly fee equals one or two new clients, the math is easier to accept.
How to compare quotes
- Monthly fee and the hours or days it includes.
- What they do themselves, and what they hand to others.
- Deliverables in the first 90 days.
- Any setup or audit fee.
- The rate for extra hours in a busy month.
- Minimum term and notice period.
- Whether they take fees from agencies or tools they recommend.
Red flags
- A fee with no hours or deliverables attached.
- A long minimum term before you see a first plan.
- Guaranteed lead numbers before they see your data.
- Pressure to use an agency they own, with no other quotes.
