SEO means helping the right people find you on Google. For a small business, the basics do most of the work.

SEO means helping the right people find you on Google. Agencies can make it sound complicated. For a small business, a handful of basics does most of the work.

1. Set up your Google Business Profile

For any business that serves a local area, this is often the most important step. It puts you on Google Maps and in local results.

Fill in every section: categories, hours, services, area, photos. Write a clear description. There is a guide to writing your Google Business Profile description.

2. Make your website easy to understand

  • One page for each main service, with a clear title.
  • Say what you do and where in the first lines of each page.
  • Use the words customers actually search for, naturally.
  • Make it fast and easy to use on a phone.
  • Make contact details and the next step obvious.

Each page also needs a page title and a short description, which become your listing in Google's results. Make them specific: "Bookkeeping for freelancers in Leeds" beats "Home".

3. Answer the questions people search

Customers type questions into Google: how much does it cost, how long does it take, how do I choose. Write clear, useful pages or posts that answer them. A good FAQ page is a simple start.

Write for people first. Search engines are built to reward pages that genuinely help.

4. Get reviews

Reviews help customers choose you, and they help local visibility too. Ask every customer, the same way, after a good experience. Here is how to ask for a Google review, within Google's rules.

5. Get mentioned by others

Links and mentions from other trusted sites signal that you are real and useful. For a small business, the natural sources are local directories, partners, suppliers, local news and industry groups. A press release for real news can help.

Avoid buying links or swapping them in bulk. Search engines treat that as spam.

6. Measure with Search Console

Google Search Console is free. It shows how often you appear in Google, for which searches, your average position and how many people click. Add your site, submit your sitemap, and check it every week or two.

Expect impressions before clicks. A new site often appears in results for weeks before people start clicking.

What not to waste money on

  • Promises of "page one in 30 days".
  • Packages of hundreds of cheap links.
  • Pages stuffed with keywords that read badly.

Keep going

SEO is slow, then steady. The businesses that win are usually the ones that keep publishing useful pages, keep asking for reviews and keep their profile up to date, month after month.

Questions people ask

What is SEO?

Search engine optimisation: making your website and online presence easy for search engines to understand and useful for the people searching, so you appear in results.

How long does SEO take for a small business?

Often weeks to months. A new site usually sees its first search impressions within a few weeks, and steady clicks later. Local profiles can work faster.

Do I need to pay for SEO?

Not to start. The basics, such as a Business Profile, clear pages, useful content and reviews, cost time rather than money.

How do I know if my SEO is working?

Use Google Search Console to see how often you appear in search, for which searches, and how many people click. Google Analytics shows what they do next.
