Zendesk and Intercom both offer a shared inbox, live chat, a help centre and an AI agent that answers customers. The real differences are how they price seats and AI, and which channels each plan includes.

The short verdict

Pick Zendesk if you want one tool for email, chat and phone, or you only need email tickets and want the lowest entry price.

Pick Intercom if chat on your site or app is your main channel, and you want an AI agent that is part of every plan and priced per outcome.

Both have a 14-day trial. Use the same week of real questions in each.

Prices and plans

All prices are in US dollars per seat or agent per month, as of October 2026, from each vendor's pricing page.

Zendesk

  • Support Team: $19 billed annually, or $25 monthly. Email and ticketing, routing, reports and automations.
  • Suite Team: $55 billed annually, or $69 monthly. Adds AI agents, messaging and live chat, and phone.
  • Suite Professional: $115 billed annually, or $149 monthly. Adds AI writing tools, skills-based routing and a phone menu.
  • Suite Enterprise: price on request.

Intercom

  • Essential: $29 billed annually, or $39 monthly. Fin, the chat widget, a shared inbox, ticketing and a public help centre.
  • Advanced: $85 billed annually, or $99 monthly. Adds workflows, round robin assignment and 20 free Lite seats.
  • Expert: $132 billed annually, or $139 monthly. Adds SSO, SLAs and support for several brands.

During research, some visits to Intercom's page showed Essential at $19 on annual billing, so check the current price.

What you get at the entry level

Zendesk Support Team is the cheapest plan here, but it covers email and ticketing only. Chat and phone start at Suite Team.

Intercom Essential includes live chat, email support and its AI agent from the start. Intercom says every plan includes unlimited live chat, support email and in-app chat. SMS, WhatsApp, phone and email campaigns are charged by use.

So for chat plus email, the fair comparison is Intercom Essential at $29 against Zendesk Suite Team at $55, both billed annually.

How each one charges for AI

Intercom charges $0.99 per Fin outcome. An outcome is counted when the customer says the answer helped, does not ask for more help, or Fin completes a workflow you set up. You pay once per conversation. Its Copilot assistant for your team is $29 per agent a month billed annually, or $35 monthly, and each agent gets 10 Copilot conversations a month free.

Zendesk counts automated resolutions, which are requests its AI agent solves without a person. Support Team and Suite Team include 5 per agent per month. Suite Professional includes 10. Extra resolutions cost $1.50 each with a commitment, or $2.00 pay-as-you-go. Copilot is $50 per agent a month, billed annually, on Suite Professional and above.

At list price, each extra AI answer costs less on Intercom. Zendesk includes a small number in the plan. For a small team, both bills depend mostly on how many questions the AI can really answer, which depends on how good your help articles are.

Trials

Zendesk offers a 14-day free trial with the features of a higher plan. Intercom offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card, including Fin and add-ons. Intercom also runs an Early Stage program for startups. At the time of writing, its page mentions up to 93% off for eligible startups.

Who each one suits

Zendesk suits businesses with several channels, especially phone, and teams that expect to grow into many agents with detailed routing.

Intercom suits online businesses and software products where customers ask questions in a chat window, and teams that want the AI agent to handle the first reply.

Neither may be needed if you are one person answering a handful of emails. A normal inbox with good saved replies can work for a long time. Customer service email templates is a good place to start those.

How to decide

  • Look at where last month's questions came from: email, chat or phone.
  • Count the people who answer. Both charge per seat.
  • Estimate how many questions a help article could answer, then price the AI on both.
  • Write your ten most common answers before the trial, so the AI has something true to use.
  • Run both trials with the same questions and compare cost and quality.
