A mission statement says what you do, for whom and why. In a small business it should fit in one breath. If you cannot remember it, nobody else will either.

What it is for

A mission statement is not decoration for a website footer. A good one helps you decide. Should you take this client? Add this service? Hire this person? If it fits the mission, yes. If not, think twice.

It also helps you explain your business in one line, to a customer, a bank or a new hire.

The three questions

  • What do you do?
  • Who do you do it for?
  • Why does it matter, to them or to you?

Answer each one in plain words. Then join them into one or two sentences.

Examples for small businesses

A bakery. We bake bread the slow way, with local flour, for neighbours who want real bread on a weekday.

A bookkeeping firm. We keep the books for small creative businesses, so their owners can spend their time on the work they love.

A cleaning company. We clean homes for busy families with the same trusted team every week, so they come home to a calm house.

A web studio. We build simple, fast websites for local shops, so they can be found and booked without paying a platform every month.

A dog-walking service. We walk dogs whose owners work long days, so every dog gets exercise, company and a familiar face.

Each one is short, names a customer and says why it matters.

Mission vs vision

A mission is what you do today. A vision is the future you are working towards, such as "every small shop in town has a website it is proud of". Large companies use both. A small business can start with the mission alone.

Mistakes to avoid

Lines to cut today
  • To be the leading provider of
  • World-class solutions
  • Exceeding customer expectations
  • Committed to excellence

These phrases appear in thousands of mission statements, which is why they mean nothing. Say what you actually do.

  • Too long. If it runs to a paragraph, cut until it fits one breath.
  • Too vague. "Helping people" could be any business.
  • Untrue. Do not promise what you cannot deliver every day.

Use it

Put it where it does work: your about page, your hiring posts, the first page of your business plan. Read it when you face a hard choice.

It sits naturally next to your value proposition, which speaks to customers, and on your about us page, which tells the story behind it.

Questions people ask

What is a mission statement?

One or two sentences that say what your business does, who it serves and why it exists. It guides decisions and tells customers what you stand for.

What is the difference between a mission and a vision statement?

A mission describes what you do now. A vision describes the future you are working towards. Small businesses often only need the mission.

How long should a mission statement be?

One or two sentences, under about 30 words. If it needs more, it is trying to say too much.

Does a small business need a mission statement?

It is not required. It helps when you hire, choose which work to take and explain your business quickly.
