Most people who leave a full cart were interested. They got distracted, wanted to compare, or hit a question at checkout. A helpful reminder brings many of them back.
Why carts are abandoned
Knowing the reasons tells you what to write.
- They got distracted and meant to come back.
- Delivery cost or time was a surprise at checkout.
- They had a question nobody answered.
- They were comparing prices or options.
- Checkout was too long or asked for too much.
Some of these are better fixed on your site than by email. If many people leave at the delivery step, show delivery costs earlier.
A simple sequence
- A few hours later: a friendly reminder of what they left.
- The next day: answer the likely question, such as delivery, returns or sizing.
- Two or three days later: a last reminder, and an incentive only if you choose to offer one.
Then stop. Most shop platforms let you set this up once and it runs on its own.

About discounts
A discount in the first email teaches customers to leave carts on purpose. Many shops send none at all. If you do, keep it for the last email and make it small.
Fix the cause too
Read the replies, and look at where people leave. A surprise delivery cost, a missing size guide or a long form loses more sales than any email can win back. Clear product descriptions that answer questions before checkout help most.
After a purchase, a good welcome email and a sensible upsell email keep the relationship going.
